New rules versions
How a new expansion's rules are noticed, checked and added.
Riot updates the Core Rules with each expansion. One command runs every step below and stops safely if anything fails, including before the database is rebuilt if the new version's effective date can't be read:
make integrate V=1.5 NOTES=https://playriftbound.com/en-us/news/announcements/core-rules-radiance-patch-notes-effective-october-16-2026/
The steps it runs, which also work one at a time. Until a new version is added, any search dated after it took effect would answer from the rules it replaced, so every step below exists to make that gap short and visible.
1. Notice it
make check-updates
Compares the version list in data/sources.yaml with the list kept by the Riftbound FAQ project and, when reachable, Riot's Rules Hub. It names any version that is missing and exits with an error, so a scheduled job can alert on it.
2. Register it
make add-version V=1.5 NOTES=https://playriftbound.com/en-us/news/announcements/core-rules-radiance-patch-notes-effective-october-16-2026/
Downloads the PDF, pins its SHA-1, records whether Riot's own CDN serves the same bytes, and appends a checked entry to data/sources.yaml. NOTES must be Riot's patch notes page: the effective date is read from it, never guessed.
3. See what it touches
make fetch dates
make version-impact V=1.5
Counts the changed, added and removed rules (matched by wording, never by number), lists the labelled questions that cite a changed rule, and ranks the changes that flip meaning. It writes references and counts only.
4. Make it searchable
make ingest
make recall METHOD=as-of
Only new text is embedded; unchanged rules come from the cache. The recall run checks that older questions still find the same rules.
Until then
search_rules returns a warning for any date it may affect, and list_versions shows it as not searchable yet. Claude Desktop is told to pass the warning on.
