ask

The full agent: an answer with versioned citations and a confidence score.

Input

question
string, required
The rules question, in plain language.
as_of
date, default today
YYYY-MM-DD. The agent only reads rules in force on this date.

What happens

  1. Route: the local model decides whether the question names a specific card. Card text is not in the corpus yet, so those answers carry a note saying so.
  2. Retrieve: the five passages that best match, from rules in force on the date.
  3. Answer: the local model answers from those passages, citing each rule. Any long run of copied rule text is replaced before you see it.
  4. Check: a confidence score from measurable signals, never the model's own claim, plus a warning if a newer rules version is published but not loaded yet.
  5. Re-search once if confidence is low: ten passages instead of five, then answer again.

Output

answer, citations (version-qualified rule references), sources (each with its validity dates), confidence, confidence_standing and warnings.

confidence_standing says whether the score passed its calibration check. If it says UNCALIBRATED, the number is not a probability. With no confidence model configured, there is no score and no re-search.

From the terminal

make ask Q="Does a countered spell still count for Legion?" AS_OF=2026-05-01

Errors

The same as search_rules, plus generator check failed when the answer model's pin does not match: run make doctor.
